Ingredients
Scale
6 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 cup granulated sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
1/2 cup milk
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, gently toss the sliced apples with 1 cup sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice until coated.
Spread the apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish. Dot the top of the apples with half of the cold butter pieces.
Prepare the topping: In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt.
Cut in the remaining cold butter cubes into the flour mixture using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in the milk until just combined to form a shaggy dough. Do not overmix.
Drop spoonfuls of the dough evenly over the apple layer.
Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
Let the cobbler cool slightly before serving warm, ideally with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
For a snickerdoodle-style topping, sprinkle the top of the dough with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar before baking.
If you prefer a caramel flavor, drizzle 1/4 cup of caramel sauce over the apples before adding the topping.
