Make this simple, sweet, and rich tart using store-bought puff pastry, fresh apples, and a buttery brown sugar glaze.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 3 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • For the Glaze: 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • For the Glaze: 2 tablespoons milk or cream
  • For the Glaze: 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet. Place it on the prepared baking sheet.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and flour until combined into a thick paste.
  4. Arrange the apple slices over the puff pastry, leaving a 1-inch border around the edges.
  5. Spread the butter-sugar mixture evenly over the apples.
  6. Fold the 1-inch border of the pastry up and over the edges of the apples to form a crust. Crimp the edges lightly with a fork.
  7. Brush the folded pastry edges with the beaten egg wash.
  8. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  9. While the tart cools slightly, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth to create the glaze.
  10. Drizzle the glaze over the warm tart before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • Use firm apples that hold their shape well during baking.
  • If you prefer a more caramelized flavor, substitute granulated sugar for brown sugar in the filling mixture.
  • For extra richness, brush the baked pastry edges with a little extra melted butter immediately after removing it from the oven.
