Make simple, savory cabbage fritters that are crispy on the outside and tender inside. This recipe uses basic pantry ingredients for a quick side dish or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups shredded green cabbage
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Place the shredded cabbage in a bowl. If the cabbage seems very wet, lightly press it with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Add the beaten egg and milk to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined to form a thick batter. Do not overmix.
  4. Fold the shredded cabbage, chopped onion, and parsley into the batter until everything is coated.
  5. Heat about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until the oil shimmers (about 350°F).
  6. Drop rounded tablespoons of the batter mixture into the hot oil, flattening them slightly with the back of the spoon to form patties. Do not overcrowd the pan.
  7. Fry for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove the fritters from the oil and place them on a wire rack or a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  9. Serve immediately with your preferred dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For extra crispiness, ensure your oil is hot enough before adding the batter.
  • You can substitute half the all-purpose flour with rice flour for a lighter texture.
  • If you prefer a different flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder to the batter.
  • To make these vegetarian, use the standard recipe as it is already meat-free.
