Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds beef chuck roast, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons dried oregano
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 12 Italian rolls
  • 1 cup giardiniera, chopped

Instructions

  1. Place the thinly sliced beef in a large pot or Dutch oven.
  2. Add beef broth, water, soy sauce, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, and red pepper flakes.
  3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 2 to 3 hours, or until the beef is very tender.
  4. Remove the beef from the pot using a slotted spoon, reserving the au jus.
  5. Shred or thinly slice the beef further if desired.
  6. Dip the Italian rolls briefly into the reserved au jus, ensuring they are moistened but not soggy.
  7. Pile a generous amount of the beef onto the bottom half of each dipped roll.
  8. Top the beef with chopped giardiniera.
  9. Place the top half of the roll on the sandwich.
  10. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For the thinnest slices, partially freezing the beef chuck roast before slicing makes it much easier to cut.
  • You can adjust the amount of red pepper flakes for your preferred level of spice.
  • If you prefer a wetter sandwich, dip the rolls more thoroughly in the au jus.
  • Giardiniera can be found in most grocery stores; choose your favorite variety.
