This is the Classic Old Fashioned Egg Custard Pie recipe, created by the team at Savory Skies. It delivers the creamy, silky texture you seek, rooted in Chef Tariq’s foundational knowledge. Enjoy this comforting piece of culinary heritage.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional, for topping)
  • 2 cups whole milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Place the unbaked pie crust on a baking sheet.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, and salt until well combined.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth.
  6. Carefully pour the custard mixture into the unbaked pie shell.
  7. Sprinkle the top lightly with ground nutmeg, if using.
  8. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes. The center should be mostly set, with a slight jiggle remaining.
  9. Cool the pie completely on a wire rack before slicing. This allows the custard to fully set.

Notes

  • Chef Tariq suggests using whole milk for the creamiest finish.
  • If you notice the crust edges browning too quickly, cover them loosely with aluminum foil during the last 20 minutes of baking.
  • This pie is excellent served slightly warm or chilled.
  • For a variation, try adding a pinch of cinnamon to the egg mixture instead of nutmeg on top.
