Enjoy this classic recipe for tender whole baked apples, filled with a warm, sweet, and spiced brown sugar mixture. It is the perfect comforting dessert for a cool evening.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium baking apples (like Honeycrisp or Fuji)
  • 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  2. Wash the apples. Use a melon baller or small spoon to carefully core the center of each apple, leaving about a half-inch of apple at the bottom so the filling stays inside.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and cinnamon and nutmeg.
  4. Fill the hollow center of each apple with the sugar and spice mixture. Place 2 to 3 small pieces of butter on top of the filling in each apple.
  5. Pour the water into the bottom of a small baking dish that fits the apples snugly.
  6. Place the filled apples into the baking dish.
  7. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork. Baste the apples with the liquid in the pan halfway through baking.
  8. Carefully remove from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

  • We recommend using firm apples that hold their shape well, such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith for a slight tartness.
  • If you prefer a richer flavor, substitute half of the water with apple cider in the baking dish.
  • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an extra treat.
