Learn how to make a classic tuna melt, a comforting sandwich with creamy tuna salad and melted cheese grilled between slices of bread. It’s a simple yet satisfying meal perfect for any time of day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (5 ounces) tuna, drained
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon chopped celery
  • 1 tablespoon chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon sweet pickle relish
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 slices bread
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 slices cheese (cheddar or American work well)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix the drained tuna, mayonnaise, celery, onion, and pickle relish.
  2. Season with salt and pepper to your preference.
  3. Spread the tuna mixture evenly onto one slice of bread.
  4. Top with the cheese slices.
  5. Place the second slice of bread on top to close the sandwich.
  6. Butter one side of the sandwich.
  7. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  8. Place the sandwich, buttered side down, in the skillet.
  9. Butter the top side of the sandwich.
  10. Grill for 3-5 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
  11. Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of Dijon mustard to the tuna salad.
  • Experiment with different types of cheese, like Swiss or provolone, for a new twist.
  • If you prefer a crispier sandwich, use butter or mayonnaise on the outside of the bread before grilling.
