Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 pounds flank steak, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, sliced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch mixed with 1 tablespoon water (for thickening)
  • Green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • Cooked white rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, sesame oil, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, and red pepper flakes. Add the sliced flank steak and toss to coat. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the marinated beef in a single layer, working in batches if necessary to avoid crowding the pan. Sear for 1-2 minutes per side until browned. Remove beef from the skillet and set aside.
  4. Add the sliced onion to the skillet and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  5. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger to the skillet and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  6. Pour in the beef broth and oyster sauce. Bring to a simmer.
  7. Whisk in the cornstarch slurry to thicken the sauce. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the sauce is glossy.
  8. Return the seared beef to the skillet and toss to coat with the sauce. Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the beef is heated through.
  9. Serve immediately over cooked white rice, garnished with chopped green onions.

Notes

  • For thinner slices of beef, partially freeze it before slicing.
  • Adjust red pepper flakes for your desired level of spice.
  • If you don’t have rice vinegar, you can substitute with white vinegar.
