Create the creamiest, most comforting mashed sweet potatoes you have ever tasted. This recipe balances the natural sweetness of the potatoes with rich butter and a hint of warm cinnamon, perfect for your next holiday table or a cozy weeknight side dish. You will achieve a silky, smooth texture every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 1/2 cup whole milk or heavy cream, warmed
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • Pinch of black pepper

Instructions

  1. Place the peeled and quartered sweet potatoes in a large pot. Cover them with cold water.
  2. Bring the water to a boil over high heat. Cook until the potatoes are very tender when pierced with a fork, about 15 to 20 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes completely. Return them to the hot, empty pot over low heat for one minute, stirring constantly, to evaporate any remaining surface moisture. This step helps prevent watery mash.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat. Add the softened butter, warm milk or cream, maple syrup, cinnamon, salt, and pepper.
  5. Mash the potatoes thoroughly using a potato masher until smooth. For extra creaminess, use an electric hand mixer on low speed for about 30 seconds, mixing just until fully combined and fluffy. Do not overmix.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning, adding more salt or maple syrup if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For an even richer flavor, roast the sweet potatoes instead of boiling them.
  • If you prefer a savory profile, skip the maple syrup and cinnamon. Instead, use 2 tablespoons of sour cream and a pinch of nutmeg.
  • To keep the mash warm for serving, place the bowl over a pot of simmering water (double boiler method).
