Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces soft goat cheese, chilled
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1/2 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional, for spicy honey)

Instructions

  1. Shape the chilled goat cheese into small, uniform balls (about 1 inch in diameter). Place them on a parchment-lined plate and freeze for 30 minutes to firm up.
  2. Set up a standard breading station: place flour in one shallow dish, the beaten egg in a second, and the Panko breadcrumbs mixed with salt and pepper in a third.
  3. Working quickly, dredge each frozen cheese ball first in the flour, shaking off excess.
  4. Dip the floured ball completely into the egg mixture.
  5. Roll the ball thoroughly in the Panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to make sure the coating adheres well. Return the coated balls to the freezer for another 15 minutes.
  6. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot or heavy-bottomed skillet to 350°F (175°C).
  7. Carefully fry the cheese balls in batches, turning often, until they are golden brown and crispy, about 2 to 3 minutes. Do not overcrowd the pot.
  8. Remove the fried balls with a slotted spoon and drain them immediately on a wire rack or paper towel-lined plate.
  9. In a small bowl, whisk together the honey and hot sauce, if using.
  10. Serve the warm goat cheese balls immediately with the honey drizzle on the side or drizzled over the top.

Notes

  • For a lighter option, you can air fry these. Spray the coated balls lightly with cooking spray and air fry at 380°F (195°C) for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  • If you prefer a holiday twist, mix finely chopped pecans into the Panko breadcrumbs before coating.
  • Make sure the cheese balls are very cold before frying to prevent them from melting too quickly in the hot oil.
