Make a simple, soft loaf of bread quickly using only three main ingredients and no yeast. This recipe requires no kneading and results in a tender crumb perfect for serving with butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 (12 ounce) can of beer, room temperature
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit (190 degrees Celsius). Grease and flour a standard 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Pour the entire can of beer into the dry ingredients. Stir gently with a spoon until just combined. Do not overmix; a few lumps are fine.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.
  5. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Remove the bread from the oven. Immediately brush the top generously with the 4 tablespoons of melted butter.
  7. Let the bread cool in the pan for 10 minutes before turning it out onto a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • For a slightly crispier crust, you can sprinkle a little coarse salt over the melted butter topping before it sets.
  • If you prefer a richer flavor, use a darker beer like a stout or brown ale.
  • To make a cheesy variation, fold 1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese into the batter just before pouring it into the pan.
