A delightful make-ahead casserole perfect for a special holiday breakfast, combining the richness of eggnog with the comfort of French toast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (1 pound) challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 3 cups eggnog
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, whipped cream, fresh berries

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange the bread cubes in an even layer in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, eggnog, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Pour the eggnog mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are moistened. Press down gently with a spatula if needed.
  5. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the casserole.
  6. Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
  7. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the bread to soak up the eggnog mixture.
  8. When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  9. Remove the plastic wrap or foil.
  10. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed up, golden brown, and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
  11. Let the casserole cool for a few minutes before serving.
  12. Serve warm with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use a good quality eggnog.
  • If you don’t have challah or brioche, French bread or Italian bread will also work.
  • You can add a splash of rum or brandy to the eggnog mixture for an adult twist.
