Ingredients
Scale
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 pound ground beef
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/2 cup beef broth
1/2 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Salt and black pepper to taste
4 large Italian rolls or sturdy sandwich buns
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 clove garlic, minced (for butter)
1/2 teaspoon dried parsley (for butter)
Instructions
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the minced garlic, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Pour in the beef broth, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Stir well to combine.
Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cook uncovered for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened to your liking. Season with salt and pepper.
While the mixture simmers, prepare the garlic bread rolls. In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, 1 minced garlic clove, and dried parsley.
Slice the rolls in half horizontally. Spread the garlic butter mixture evenly on the cut sides of the rolls.
Place the rolls butter-side up on a baking sheet. Broil for 1 to 3 minutes, watching closely, until the edges are golden brown and toasted.
Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the bottom half of each toasted roll. Top with the other half of the roll and serve immediately.
Notes
For extra flavor, add 1/4 cup of grated Parmesan cheese to the meat mixture during the last 5 minutes of simmering.
If you prefer a softer bun, skip the broiling step and simply toast the buttered rolls in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2 minutes per side.
Use ground turkey or ground pork instead of beef for a different flavor profile.
