Make the ultimate crowd-pleasing side dish with this easy, creamy green bean casserole recipe. It uses traditional ingredients like cream of mushroom soup and crispy fried onions, making it perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (10.5 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans cut green beans, drained
  • 1 1/3 cups crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 1.5-quart casserole dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, stir together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper until smooth.
  3. Add the drained green beans and 1/2 cup of the crispy fried onions to the soup mixture. Stir gently to coat everything evenly.
  4. Pour the mixture into your prepared casserole dish and spread it into an even layer.
  5. Bake for 25 minutes.
  6. Remove the casserole from the oven. Sprinkle the remaining 2/3 cup of crispy fried onions evenly over the top.
  7. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for another 5 to 10 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is bubbly.
  8. Let the casserole stand for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can prepare this dish ahead of time. Assemble the casserole (without the topping) up to 24 hours in advance, cover, and refrigerate. Add the topping and bake according to the instructions, adding about 5 to 10 minutes to the initial baking time if baking straight from the refrigerator.
  • For a homemade green bean casserole variation, substitute the canned beans with 1.5 pounds of fresh or frozen green beans, blanched until tender-crisp.
  • If you want a Southern green bean casserole flavor, you can stir in 1/2 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese with the soup mixture.
