Create a delicious grilled tuna sandwich, perfect for a satisfying meal. This recipe offers two delightful variations: one featuring a perfectly seared tuna steak and the other a creamy tuna salad, both nestled between slices of toasted bread.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tuna steak (about 6 oz), 1/2 inch thick OR 1 can (5 oz) tuna, drained
  • 2 slices of bread
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise (for tuna salad variation)
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (for tuna salad variation)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped celery (for tuna salad variation)
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped red onion (for tuna salad variation)
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Optional: Lettuce, tomato slices, cheese slices

Instructions

  1. For seared tuna: Season the tuna steak generously with salt and pepper. Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium-high heat. Sear the tuna steak for 1-2 minutes per side for rare, or longer for more well-done tuna. Let it rest for a few minutes, then slice.
  2. For tuna salad: In a bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, celery, and red onion. Mix well. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  4. Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in a skillet over medium heat.
  5. Layer your chosen tuna filling (seared tuna slices or tuna salad) on top of the bread in the skillet. Add any optional toppings like lettuce, tomato, or cheese.
  6. Top with the second slice of bread, butter-side up.
  7. Grill the sandwich for 3-5 minutes per side, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese (if using) is melted.
  8. Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Adjust searing time for tuna steak based on your preferred doneness.
  • Feel free to customize your tuna salad with other ingredients like pickles, capers, or fresh herbs.
  • Experiment with different types of bread for varied flavors and textures.
