Create a romantic breakfast with these adorable heart-shaped red velvet pancakes. Perfect for Valentine’s Day or any special occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon red food coloring
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil or butter for greasing
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream, fresh berries, powdered sugar, chocolate syrup

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  2. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, melted butter, vanilla extract, and red food coloring until well combined.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and whisk until just combined. A few lumps are okay.
  4. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or non-stick skillet over medium heat.
  5. To create heart shapes, you can use a heart-shaped pancake mold or carefully pour the batter into a heart shape using a squeeze bottle or a piping bag with a small opening. Alternatively, pour a round pancake and then gently shape it with a spatula while it cooks.
  6. Pour about 1/4 cup of batter onto the hot griddle for each pancake.
  7. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Flip when bubbles appear on the surface.
  8. Serve warm with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For a deeper red color, you can add a few extra drops of red food coloring.
  • Buttermilk can be substituted with regular milk mixed with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar; let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
  • Ensure your griddle is evenly heated for consistent cooking.
  • Adjust heat as needed to prevent burning.
