Ingredients
Scale
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup unsalted butter
2 cups beef broth (low sodium recommended)
1 teaspoon soy sauce or tamari
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
Pinch of salt (to taste)
Instructions
Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
Whisk in the flour to create a smooth roux. Cook, stirring constantly, for 1 to 2 minutes until the roux smells slightly nutty. Do not let it brown too deeply.
Slowly pour in the beef broth while whisking continuously to prevent lumps.
Bring the mixture to a simmer, whisking often. The gravy will begin to thicken as it simmers.
Stir in the soy sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper.
Continue to simmer for 3 to 5 minutes, or until the gravy reaches your desired consistency.
Taste the gravy. Add a pinch of salt if necessary, keeping in mind the broth and soy sauce already contain sodium.
Remove from heat and serve immediately over your favorite comfort foods.
Notes
For a deeper brown color, use a dark roux, cooking the flour and butter mixture for 3 to 4 minutes until it reaches a light peanut butter color.
If the gravy becomes too thick upon standing, whisk in a tablespoon of warm water or broth until it loosens.
Chef Tariq suggests using high-quality beef broth for the best flavor foundation.
This gravy works well over mashed potatoes, meatloaf, turkey, or biscuits.
