Bake festive Orange Cardamom Sugar Cookies. These cookies offer a bright citrus twist combined with the warm spice of cardamom, perfect for your holiday baking. You will find this recipe straightforward and rewarding.

Ingredients

  • All-purpose flour: 2 1/2 cups
  • Baking powder: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt: 1/4 teaspoon
  • Unsalted butter, softened: 1 cup (2 sticks)
  • Granulated sugar: 1 cup
  • Egg: 1 large
  • Orange zest: 1 tablespoon (from about 1 large orange)
  • Orange extract: 1 teaspoon
  • Ground cardamom: 1 teaspoon
  • Powdered sugar (for dusting/glaze): 1 cup

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl. Set this aside.
  2. In a separate large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. You will need an electric mixer for this.
  3. Beat in the egg, orange zest, orange extract, and ground cardamom until just combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until the dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
  5. Divide the dough in half, wrap each half in plastic wrap, and flatten into a disk. Chill the dough for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disk of dough to about 1/4 inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut out your desired shapes.
  8. Place the cutouts onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 1 inch between them.
  9. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. You want the centers to still look pale.
  10. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Once cool, dust generously with powdered sugar or prepare a simple glaze using powdered sugar and a splash of orange juice.

Notes

  • Chill the dough thoroughly; this prevents the cookies from spreading too much during baking.
  • For maximum flavor, use fresh orange zest just before mixing it into the batter.
  • You can substitute the orange extract with 2 tablespoons of fresh orange juice if you prefer a milder flavor.
