Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup salted caramel sauce (for batter)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 2 tablespoons milk or cream (for glaze)
  • Extra cinnamon-sugar mixture (for dusting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour one 8-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Alternately add the dry ingredients and the buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Gently fold in 1/2 cup of the salted caramel sauce into the batter.
  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.
  8. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. While the cake cools, prepare the glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar and milk or cream until smooth.
  11. Drizzle the glaze over the cooled cake.
  12. Drizzle the remaining salted caramel sauce over the glaze.
  13. Dust generously with the extra cinnamon-sugar mixture before serving.

Notes

  • You can use store-bought caramel sauce for convenience.
  • For an extra churro flavor, lightly brush the warm cake with melted butter before dusting with cinnamon-sugar.
  • This cake pairs wonderfully with a light dusting of powdered sugar on top of the caramel drizzle.
