Ingredients
Scale
1 pound bulk breakfast sausage
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 can (8 count) refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it up until it is fully browned. Drain off any excess grease well.
In a medium bowl, combine the cooked sausage and the softened cream cheese. Mix until the ingredients are completely incorporated and smooth.
Unroll the crescent roll dough onto a lightly floured surface. Do not separate the triangles. Gently press the seams together to form one large rectangle.
Spread the sausage and cream cheese mixture evenly over the entire surface of the dough rectangle.
Starting from one of the long sides, tightly roll the dough into a log.
Using a sharp knife or unflavored dental floss, slice the log into 1/2-inch thick pinwheels. You should get about 20 to 24 pieces.
Place the pinwheels cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one.
Brush the tops of the pinwheels lightly with the beaten egg.
Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown and puffed.
Let them cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving.
Notes
You can use puff pastry instead of crescent rolls for a richer texture.
For extra flavor, sprinkle a little garlic powder or dried chives into the sausage and cheese mixture.
Make sure your cream cheese is truly room temperature; this makes mixing much easier.
These freeze well before baking. Assemble, place on a parchment-lined tray, freeze solid, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cook time.
