Learn how to make a delicious sesame-crusted tuna steak with perfectly seared edges and a rare, tender center. This recipe includes a simple dipping sauce to complement the flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound tuna steak
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • For the dipping sauce:
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger

Instructions

  1. Pat the tuna steak dry with paper towels.
  2. Season both sides of the tuna steak with salt and pepper.
  3. Spread the sesame seeds on a plate and press both sides of the tuna steak into the seeds to coat evenly.
  4. Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Sear the tuna steak for 1-2 minutes per side for rare, or longer for more well-done, until golden brown and crusty with sesame seeds.
  6. While the tuna is searing, whisk together soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey, and ginger in a small bowl for the dipping sauce.
  7. Slice the tuna steak and serve immediately with the dipping sauce.

Notes

  • For a medium-rare center, aim for 2 minutes of searing per side.
  • Adjust the ginger and honey in the sauce to your preference.
  • Other dipping sauce ideas include wasabi aioli or a ginger-sesame vinaigrette.
