Shipwreck Casserole is a simple, comforting, layered dish from the Depression era. Rediscovered by retro recipe enthusiasts, it offers a surprisingly satisfying meal with minimal fuss.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 can (10.75 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 can (10.75 oz) condensed cream of celery soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 package (8 oz) refrigerated biscuit dough, cut into quarters
  • 1/2 cup crushed potato chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a skillet, cook the ground beef and onion until the beef is browned and the onion is tender. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in the cream of mushroom soup, cream of celery soup, milk, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  4. Pour the beef mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  5. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese evenly over the beef mixture.
  6. Arrange the biscuit pieces over the cheese layer.
  7. Top with the crushed potato chips.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the casserole is bubbly and the biscuits are golden brown.

Notes

  • For an extra layer of flavor, you can add a layer of canned, drained peas or corn before the biscuit topping.
  • Feel free to experiment with different types of cheese for the topping.
  • Ensure your biscuit pieces are spread out evenly for consistent baking.
