Ingredients
Scale
8 slices thick-cut bread (Brioche or Challah recommended)
8 oz cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 large egg
1/2 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of nutmeg
2 tablespoons butter, for frying
1 cup mixed berries (blueberries and strawberries), for topping
Maple syrup, for serving
Instructions
In a small bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy. This is your filling.
Take four slices of bread. Spread half of the cream cheese mixture evenly on one side of each slice.
Place the remaining four slices of bread on top of the cream cheese-covered sides to create four stuffed sandwiches. Gently press the edges together.
In a shallow dish, whisk together the egg, milk, cinnamon, and nutmeg to create the custard batter.
Dip each stuffed sandwich into the batter, ensuring both sides are coated. Do not soak them; you want the coating, not saturation.
Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
Carefully place the stuffed French toast sandwiches in the hot skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy.
Slice each piece in half diagonally before serving warm. Top generously with mixed berries and maple syrup.
Notes
Use stale or slightly dry bread for the best texture; it absorbs the batter better without becoming soggy.
For an extra crispy outside, you can lightly dust the sandwiches with flour after dipping them in the batter.
Chef Tariq suggests adding a tiny splash of almond extract to the cream cheese filling for deeper flavor.
If you prefer a make-ahead version, assemble the stuffed toast the night before, cover, and refrigerate. Add 2-3 minutes to the cooking time when baking from cold.
