A simple recipe for a classic apple tart using flaky puff pastry and thinly sliced apples.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 3 medium apples (such as Gala or Honeycrisp)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples.
  3. In a medium bowl, toss the apple slices with the sugar, flour, and cinnamon until evenly coated.
  4. Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet onto the prepared baking sheet. Score a 1-inch border around the edges of the pastry using a knife, being careful not to cut all the way through.
  5. Arrange the seasoned apple slices neatly inside the scored border, overlapping them slightly in rows or a spiral pattern.
  6. Dot the top of the apples with the small pieces of butter.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and milk to create an egg wash. Brush the egg wash lightly over the exposed puff pastry border.
  8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed, and the apples are tender.
  9. Let the tart cool slightly on the baking sheet before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can brush the baked tart with warmed apricot jam for a glaze.
  • Use firm apples that hold their shape well during baking.
  • If you prefer a sweeter crust, sprinkle a little extra sugar over the border before baking.
