A straightforward recipe for baked apples topped with a sweet biscuit topping, perfect for a fall dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour (for topping)
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar (for topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  4. In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the 1/2 cup flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt for the topping.
  5. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Stir in the milk until just combined to form a soft dough. Do not overmix.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of the topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish.
  8. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  9. Let the cobbler cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
  • You can use a cast-iron skillet instead of a baking dish for a rustic presentation.
  • If your apples are very sweet, reduce the granulated sugar in the filling by 1 tablespoon.
