- 1 loaf (1 pound) day-old bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 cup butter, melted
- 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes. Gently press the bread down to soak up the liquid.
- Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or preferably overnight.
- When ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). Remove the plastic wrap.
- In a small bowl, mix the melted butter and brown sugar until crumbly. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the soaked bread.
- Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until the casserole is puffed, golden brown, and the center is set.
- Let the casserole rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
- Use slightly stale or day-old bread like challah, brioche, or French bread for the best texture.
- If you prefer a thinner topping, you can skip the butter/brown sugar mixture and simply dust the top with powdered sugar after baking.
- This casserole reheats well in the microwave or oven the next day.
